At the 1881 census he was living at Portland, Dorset with his wife, Elizabeth Giddings, two sons and 2 daughters. It is assumed that he was on duty working as a Lighthouse Keeper at Portland Bill, but later returned, with his family, to Great Cheverell, his wife's birthplace.
