LINK WITH OLD HACKNEY CARRIAGE DAYS.
A link with the old hackney carriage days in Cheltenham has been severed by the death, in his 94th year, of Mr.Herbert Arther Sumner, formerly of Lansdown Mews.
Mr.Sumner, who died in a local nursing home, was a well-known figure in Cheltenham in his younger days when he became the proprietor of a fleet of nearly 20 carriages. He started in business in 1885 as a young man of 22, and retired in 1935.
Son of a blacksmith, he was born in Erlestoke village just outside Devizes, and came to Cheltenham at the age of 18 to work for a coal merchant. Four years later he ventured out on his own on a hackney carriage business, acquiring a single carriage and horse.
ROAD JOURNEYS
After acquiring the Lansdown Mews, Mr.Sumner gradually added to his business, and eventually built up a fleet of hackney carriages which operated day and night in and around the Cheltenham district.
Often, his carriages would travel as far as Oxford, and Devizes, and journeys to Northleach and Stow-on-the-Wold were frequent.
When he retired, he still kept some of the horses he prized; only when the war came did he decide to dispose of them. "I couldn't face the thought of bombs falling on the stables," he used to tell his son, Mr.Herbert Sumner, who now lives in retirement at 165 Brooklyn Road.
ACTIVE FIGURE
Always tremendously active, Mr.Sumner often used to work for over 20 hours a day. Yet, oddly enough, he was a great walker.
Only last year, then 92, he walked the five miles to Bishop's Cleeve to visit the annual show, and then walked back again in the evening.
He is survived by his son, a daughter, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The picture of the late Mr.Sumner, which is reproduced above, was taken by Mr.John W.Champ of Churchdown, a member of the Cheltenham Camera Club, and has been exhibited by him.

It is generally considered that the FEW family originated from Wiltshire, UK, and the father of Jeffery, Thomas, Richard and Eydith Few is likely to be the first in the family since records began. His estimated date of birth is about 1550.
Records show that the 'original' Few's all lived in a group of nearby villages, and currently the connection between William Few 1599 of Market Lavington (who was the start of the American Few ancestry) and the Few's who remained in Wiltshire, is not known. Everything points to William possibly being the son of Jeffery Few c1575, however records show him as being born in the nearby village of Market Lavington and not Bishops Canning where Jeffery was born, but he could have moved - just a few miles away. A second brother, Thomas, married 3 years after William's birth so may not be a contender, and a third brother, Richard, had children born in Bishops Canning either side of William's birth date of 1599, so his family was less likely to have moved to Market Lavington.
For the purposes of creating 'a link' until more information is available, William is shown in this tree as the son of Jeffery c1575.
More research is needed.
